Build your career through a traineeship

Combine practical, on-the-job experience with nationally recognised training. A traineeship with The Community College allows you to earn while you learn, developing real skills that lead to meaningful employment and long-term career growth.

What is a traineeship?

A traineeship is a formal training arrangement that combines paid work with structured study. You’ll work in a real job while completing a nationally recognised qualification, gaining both the hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen industry.

Traineeships can be undertaken full-time or part-time, and are available to new entrants to the workforce as well as existing employees seeking to enhance their skills and career opportunities.

Who can do a traineeship?

School leavers looking to enter the workforce

People re-entering employment after a break

Existing workers wanting to upskill or gain formal recognition

Employers wanting to train or develop their staff

You can begin a traineeship at almost any stage of your career journey, provided you have an employer willing to support you throughout the program.

How WEA Illawarra can help

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 90194), The Community College works closely with employers, trainees, and industry partners to deliver high-quality training that meets national standards.

We can assist with:
  • Selecting the most suitable qualification for your workplace or career goal
  • Designing flexible training plans that balance work and study
  • Managing training and assessment in line with industry requirements
  • Supporting both employers and trainees throughout the program

Training can take place at your workplace, online, or in our modern training facilities, depending on your program and schedule.

Eligibility and registration

Eligibility for a traineeship is confirmed by an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider. Generally, a trainee will:

  • Be employed full-time or part-time
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Live or work in New South Wales

Your AASN provider will complete the required paperwork with both the employer and trainee to register the contract with Training Services NSW.

They will also provide details about any financial incentives and wage subsidies that may be available through the Australian Government.

The fee for training for a traineeship is provided by the NSW Government through NSW Smart and Skilled funding.

Once registration is complete, The Community College’s Traineeship Coordinator will contact you to confirm workplace training arrangements and next steps.
