Course overview

This class is for returning students only, not suitable for beginners.

Dip into the world of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, e.g. Monet, Degas, Van Gough.

Learn the principles of Impressionist painting including their values regarding light, colour and technique.

Students will complete up to 3 paintings all based on Impressionist technique and principles.

Impressionism is a glorious way to paint that is easy, explorative and fun.

WHAT TO BRING:

1. 3 Canvases: 2 larger stretched Canvases, or canvas boards; 16 x 20 inches (max)

1 smaller A4 size Canvas or Board (approx. 12 x 9 inches, or 30 x 20cms)

2. Paints: Assorted colours in Acrylic or Water-Soluble Oil Paints (no solvents allowed in classroom). Good quality starter paint kits are fine.

Colours should include: Yellow, red, blue, White; or specifically: Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium or true Red, Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White; additional colours can include: Lemon Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Purple, Paynes Grey.

3. Assorted brushes: natural bristle or synthetic.

4. “Retarder” medium for acrylic paints (to slow down drying process) – not needed for Oil Paints

5. 2 palettes; preferably white “reusable” plastic (picnic plates) or ceramic plates with an untextured bottom.

6. 2 water jars

7. Old towel (to protect desk tops)

8. Paper towel
